Iaido

Iaido

Iaidō (居合道) is a Japanese martial art associated with the quick, controlled movements of drawing the sword from its scabbard, striking or cutting an opponent. Iaidō is almost entirely based on the teaching of forms, or kata.  Iaidō does not include direct competition or sparring of any kind. Because of this non-competitive aspect, and iaidō’s emphasis on precise, controlled, fluid motion, it is sometimes referred to as “moving Zen.”

The schools or “ryu” of Iaido practiced at Aikido of London are Muso Shinden Ryu and Shindo Munen Ryu Tachi Iai.  Muso Shinden-ryu is an Iaido koryu or traditional (old) school and has been passed on to and developed for modern times by Nakayama Hakudo (1869 – 1958). Nakayama was one of the greatest martial artists of the 20th century. He was a master of Kendo, Iaido, and Jodo.

Iaido can be practised  on its own or with Aikido.
